Fame, Mother's Day....cont'd
. . .possibly like a society of bumbling fools clamouring for fame.
Fame: the beacon against our indignity.
Fame: proclaiming our worth and quieting the critical voices we have internalized that still echo in our heads.
In addition to his famous exclamation:
Greek mathematician Archimedes also said:
“Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum strong enough, and I will move the world.”
According to Fuller:
Our lever is the will to dignity, and;
Our fulcrum is the stand against ranking somebodies and nobodies.
And here's where 15 Minutes of Fame,
6 degrees of separation &
Mother's Day came crashing in for me.
[sorry, my brain segues this way]
History forgets almost everyone.
But, most significantly, history forgets, overlooks, and ignores the role of women, especially mothers.
(more so if they're well-behaved according to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich)
The thing about that, says Ulrich:
History isn't simply what happened in the past; it is what later generations choose to remember. (slight quibble: it is passed down)
Ulrich, who taught at Harvard, was a historian of early America and the history of women. Her approach to history has been described as a tribute to "the silent work of ordinary people".
(...like mothers)
And this is ultimately why you've all heard me rant and rage against a capitalist society of desperately seeking celebrity/famers that as Michael Parenti said
"best rewards the worst part of us: the ruthless, competitive, conniving, opportunistic, acquisitive drives, . . ."
Sadly, fame and fortune define our current society's love story. We know what it rewards, but we may not often think of what and who are ignored and punished in this love story: those who give & collaborate, those who are humble, generous, and kind people...
PEOPLE LIKE MY MOTHER!!
And you guessed it, you won't find my mother's name in history books.
Her name was:
PEOPLE LIKE MY MOTHER!!
And you guessed it, you won't find my mother's name in history books.
Her name was:
Therese (Aucoin) Desveaux
My Mom is the map of my life, the geography of my heart and the best of me, and of every heroine I've ever written about.
My Mom is with me every day of my life, especially here in our new tree house by the lake, I feel her around me with every rustling of the wind in the trees.
My Mom should be in our history books. . .
. . . so that future generations would know about how kind, selfless souls with hearts brimming with love moved this earth quietly and with dignity inspiring her children and all who met her to become better human beings.
My Mom could give future generations hope.
And even if I don't live in a dignitarian society like the one I dream of, where rank has lost its bite, where nobodies become somebodies and where dignity belongs to all, that dream lives on in my heart, that dream you began for me by giving me life.
Thank you, Mama. I will love you forever.
And, you will always be in my history book.
Heureuse Fête des Mères Demain
(Happy Mother's Day)!
Avec mon amour chaleureuse, mon profond respect et tant d'admiration,
(With ardent love, my deepest respect & my admiration,)
Ta P'tite, Dina
