What nurtures your creativity? Who inspires you? Muses - daughters of memory - 9 daughters of Zeus. According to the ancients, these muses presided over song and poetry, as well as over the arts and sciences. My mother is my muse. I see this picture on my desk every morning and greet her:
"Allo Maman, ah, bah t'es belle aujourd'hui!" When you find your muse do treasure her. They are rare and beautiful creatures!! Here's to a wonderful & sunny Saturday, TartanFrog

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Passed in my mid-term about an hour ago. Credit: bestsampleresume.com Here's the most important thing I've learned so far: I'm a designer, you're a designer, we're all designers -- some of us are just better at certain kinds of designs than others & some have pieces of paper saying they are 'certified' designers which does NOT necessarily mean they're better than you are. To my writerlies: We are all growing and learning about ourselves, others and the universe as we symbiotically affect those designs. For more ideas about designing and growth check out Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto on Growth. Since this one's a keeper I'm providing the link to the PureCaffeine blog that has a printable version of the manifesto. You will definitely see how closely it parallels the design of our fictions. Have a great weekend, TartanFrog --This one's for my fellow Monk Writers especially:) Picked up a Writer's Digest yesterday that led me to an article by Susan Cushman. Hope you don't all feel like the folks in the cartoon when I'm reading:) My favourite quote from her article: “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” (Aristotle) Susan's 4 main ways to make the most of critique groups: 1. Sometimes it’s hard to hold onto yourself in the face of greatness. Or, it’s OK to disagree with someone who is famous and successful. 2. Be discerning. Keep in mind the source of each comment and weigh the feedback accordingly on feedback like: “Have you thought about killing off Uncle Jack instead of Aunt Sally?” 3. Learn to handle conflicting advice. LIfe lesson. 'Nuff said! 4. Cultivate humility. Really! Well I'm not sure I agree with ALL of Susan Cushman's pointers. I'd be apt to change #4 to: Before the group begins to hack away at your 'baby' with a chainsaw . . . . . .imagine you are on an airplane going through severe turbulence and you must listen catlike to each & every sound that might indicate impending disaster or the glimmer of a future safe landing. Oh, and don't forget to grab the glass of (wine or scotch or whatever) sitting next to you and down it in one gulp first:) To check out Cashman's full article please click here. Wishing one & all a fabulous weekend of living the blog motto: Sleep. Play. Create. (& imagine smiling with every breath) Peace out, TartanFrog Reminder to everyone that tonight's gathering will happen, but at Chris Benjamin's book launch. No edits or feedback required - just your presence!! See details here. (scroll down to the Wired Monk News section) Photo source: aspringwind.blogspot.com Ironically Thanksgiving coincided with my reading a chapter from my Dal textbook (Design for Ecological Democracy). A chapter entitled 'sacredness' - sacred design, sacred spaces, what did 'sacred' in my life mean anyway? The answers surprised me in that all the spaces I'd mentally attach a label to as either sacred or having the sacred potential were connected to my childhood. 1. Can there be a more sacred space in a home than its kitchen? The heart of any home, especially the one my Mom gave so much meaning to, celebrates the power of food to nourish our body and soul. Choosing a farmhouse sink is so trendy nowadays, but I see it as a way of women connecting with their mothers and grandmothers. In my case, the kitchen also happens to be the spot I do most of my novel writing. 2. Okay, okay. Some of you would argue that the bedroom is the most sacred space in the home. I chose this particular photo because the view reminded me of the Cape Breton Highlands, my favourite sacred outdoor space. So, a place where you can rest & rejuvenate, play and be creative -- which happens to be my blog's motto so I won't argue -- except to add that if you were arguing on the count of the sex, you might want to diversify and try the kitchen:) For my absolute, numero uno, TOP SACRED SPACE click here |
