1. Long Walks
As a former hiking guide, I love the woods, but urban foraging can be just as fruitful, like the sign I saw on a telephone pole (left). City walks invariably mean coming across many doors, alleys, passageways, and I wonder what goes on behind them. Sometimes these thoughts turn into stories.
Pay attention to those doors

Ever since we began blocking the entrance to our caves and warding off evil spirits from entering, the door has arguably become the most important feature in our homes and buildings.
It’s a symbol of passage from one state to another, from a public space to a private space, . . . from light to darkness, or darkness to light. It's ripe!

2. The Road Trip
Photo: One of my favourite road trips, taken right here in Nova Scotia
I LOVE road trips!
I know, I know there's the whole carbon emissions thing, but it's not like I'm going on a road trip every day, so deal!
Like all the greatest stories, the road trip is a journey.
I like to take road trips on my own and I'm equally pleased to take them with others, as long as they're the RIGHT others.

3. Road Trip Movies
Sorry to all you 'Taking-a-Long-Walk' movie-makers, but I'm waiting for one of those that inspires me to write (okay maybe Count Laszlo de Almásy, aka Ralph Fiennes' walk in the English Patient counts, but that came from Ondaatje's book anyway).
One of my all-time favourite road trip movies is called Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)
A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide.
And who out there hasn't seen Little Miss Sunshine?

And there you have it!
My 3 favourite ways to escape massive amounts of bullshit.
What's yours??
